Killian warned me that the apartment we’re moving to was close to one of his casinos, but he failed to mention that it’s directly across the road from Diamonds. Kieryn pulls into the underground parking lot and enters the code, the iron gates open, and I’m met with a row of matt black sports cars. It doesn’t take a genius to work out who each one belongs to. It’s as if Killian has taken up every available spot with a car of his own. Fuck knows where anyone else parks.

Kieryn parks in the one spot I can see available, and I wait for him to come and open my door. Not because I expect it, but because the last time I tried, Kieryn went off on a nice long rant about why I’m to wait for him to do it for me. Something about checking our surroundings and a lot of other bullshit that I didn’t listen to. The resounding fact I found out that day was that while Kieryn’s mom was a lowlife piece of shit, his dad wasn’t. He taught him that men walk closest to the road when you’re walking, if they ask someone out on a date, they pay, and you never tell an angry woman to calm down—which has been a saving grace over the last ten years—but, most of all, opening doors is a must.

So Kieryn can claim he does it for my safety, but in reality, he does it because the only person who ever loved him told him to. So he does.

I kick the bag with my fighting gear under the driver’s seat and pick up the paper bag containing three cheeseburgers before I climb out of the car. By rights, I shouldn’t have room for any more food after the number of chicken nuggets, fries and ice cream I’ve eaten tonight, but my stomach still growls when the smell hits me.

Kieryn laughs as he holds out his hand for me. “I’ve created a junk food monster,” he teases.

I slap his hand away and step out of the car. “Call it making up for lost time.”

We make our way to the elevator, and I almost die of a heart attack when the doors open and Liam is standing there with that cheeky grin on his face that makes me wonder how he and Killian have been friends for so long. He’s the polar opposite of Killian in every way. So bright and energetic, full of life and optimism. That’s not to say there’s not a darker side to Liam, but he hides it better than most.

He nods to Kieryn. “You’re dismissed.” Kieryn scowls, which only makes Liam laugh. “Don’t shoot the messenger, I just don’t fancy getting on the bad side of Killian. At least not today.” He winks at me, making me bite back a laugh. He might not want to get on Killian’s bad side, but I don’t think he’s going to achieve that by winking at me.

Kieryn looks down at me with concern.
